Copperfish is a family business, based in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, that creates beautiful lighting from salvaged and storm-fallen timber, selected for its character and provenance.
Established in 2016 by Eoin Shanley, the seeds for the business were sown during the restoration of a 200-year-old thatched cottage a few years earlier. Following conservation best practices, Eoin and his wife Yvonne used local, traditional and salvaged materials to lovingly and painstakingly restore the cottage. While Yvonne researched conservation and sustainable materials, Eoin began working with old, salvaged wood under the tutelage of a former coach builder and master joiner.
When they found it difficult to find lighting that they liked, Eoin started to make his own using the skills he had learnt with materials he had to hand. Very quickly he started to get requests from friends and family and soon after, Copperfish was born.
"With the cottage we felt we were restoring a piece of our heritage for future generations. It’s the same with our lamps – the wood we love has history, character, and the traces of where it came from".
Eoin Shanley, Copperfish Founder and Maker
